Water To The Stars: Central Barangaroo Masterplan Consolidated Cultural Report

Turpin+ Crawford Studio worked closely with a multi-disciplinary team led by Skidmore Owings & Merrill (Chicago) to develop a cultural strategy for Barangaroo Central.

Cradled between Observatory Hill, with its colonial era astronomical observatory, and Sydney Harbour, the strategy developed an understanding of Barangaroo Central framed by the water and the stars. This environmental historical and cultural nexus traces ongoing journeys from Sydney’s ancient Indigenous past to our collective, sustainable and creative future.

Water To The Stars outlined multiple interwoven threads to inform the development of Barangaroo Central including a focus on Indigenous culture, education, city arts ecology, living heritage and the transformation of Barangaroo from a port of trade, to a port of commerce, culture and ideas.

Cultural activation strategies were also developed with the team, and Turpin+Crawford Studio were commissioned to develop a suite of illustrative public art concepts.
